-Today went well and we saw some great acting
-The play is moving along.
-We need to be harder on the Psychologist scene and getting them to take it more seriously.
-How are the props coming along? We are still missing a good amount of them.

Yeah I brought all the props except for the sour belts because they are sold out these two days!!! Other than that the snack bar is full of food! About the beagles I don't think it can last until the actual day it will be really...taste not good. So should I buy more before the play or... any ideas? People were doing good job today and it is really going together right now.
ReplyDeleteI thought today went really well.... I think the root of the problem with the psychologist office is Amber and Dj. If we talk to them seperatlely from the group tomorrow and stress the importance of seriousness at this point I think they will get the idea. Also people seemed to have a little trouble with announciating, but besides that the whole thing was great.
ReplyDeleteXander brings up a point I have been meaning to discuss which is enunciation and diction. Now that the blocking is pretty smooth, things are coming into place technically, it is time to turn your attention and your ear to listening to your actors. You have a lot of first timers and they've got to be heard!! Take on your best Vander Schaaff personas and make sure the voices are warmed up, projecting, and ready to be understood.
ReplyDeleteI'm in complete agreement with Xander and Houston on this one. Amber and DJ just really need to keep their composure and I think once that is fixed the psychologist office will look fantastic. Would have liked have done the last scene in bathroom in Act I, but Tommy and Dean weren't there so no big deal. I have all my props taken care and yeah. Overall, we got a lot done today and I was so pleased with Will and Aaron. They've come such a long way and have truly found their characters.
ReplyDeleteSo today went well as opposed to Friday, but there is still a lot to do. Ms. Houston and Xander are right to say that diction needs to be better, I find trouble hearing at some times and that won't be good if we have lots of people in to muffle the sound.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't help but laugh at the environmental idea list with the big recycle sign stamped on it, that was golden (literally!). An issue I have to address is Tristain, he is a mini-Xander on the "push-buttons meter." He goofs off when not doing anything and has no respect for authority. I think when we start the next run through from the beginning we need to start putting emphasis on freezing.
Finally: The picture of Winston and the Queen is funny, there is no denying it. That is why it is completely inappropriate for the Headmaster's office. Is the play a comedy with some serious issues in it? YES. Is Mr. Garfield meant to be a silly character? YES. Is Mr. Gordon meant to be a silly character? YES. Is Mr. Lipinski meant to be a silly character? YES Is Mr. Sail meant to be a silly character? NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, and NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He may have his quirks, but he is respected and looked up too. His office should reflect this seriousness and the very presence of a picture of the Queen with a moustache (even if no one in the audience can see it) totally removes the aspect that the character from the play. People respect Mr. Sail but I would have no respect for anyone who has a picture like that in their office and neither would you. Mr. Sail is not the comical character; he is the pillar of seriousness in a sea of ridiculous radicals concerned with the prom and the environment (Along with a Class President who did something totally inappropriate). Mr. Sail is not meant to be like Mr. Garfield, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Lipinski, or any of the other teachers, he is meant to be like Mr. Rigg and Mr. Rigg had no such picture in his office. The matter is closed, Pibl and Coleman, could you please get someone to hang up the atlas on that wall.
Thank you and good night.
Sincerely
Charles Merrick
yo yoo did we confirm the thursday show? and i need to meet with ms hall about ticket stuff she and ms h were in a meeting after school so ill snag her tomorrow to go over it..sounds to me like we are on schedule all good things ladies and gents!!
ReplyDeletethis is aj signing off..
So today went well i thought from what i saw...
ReplyDeleteDoctor Dolan was in a meeting after school so recording has been moved to tomorrow for sure (promise!!!)
We cleared another rack so that the costumes are more spread out and it just looks more esthetically pleasing. Leah's dress is done!
I was also mulling over makeup for nick cavalier and i've decided that instead of making gray and dead looking stuff i will go more in a blue gray dead looking stuff direction since he drowned on the job (tihi).
And charles I understand what you're trying to say but your post made me feel like you're yelling at all of us and that made me feel bad because i thought it was funny and i thought it was meant as like a little joke/secret for you to keep things fresh, kinda like an acting help. So please don't go so crazy about it because that's just gonna get everyone else even more riled up about it. I do understand though...
other than that i'll be gathering ideas on the broadway trip this saturday since we're seeing "the adams family"
Good deal guys and keep it up...things are happening!
Charles - are you familiar with the Harry Potter series? What if Mr. Sail is a bit like Dumbledore? Well-respected, incredibly intelligent, but also slightly whimsical. That's the way I always viewed Mr. Rigg the few times I met him - and I think he would appreciate a bit of fun added to the character based off him, no? You need to remember: you are an actor. You aren't playing Charles Merrick, but Mr. Sail. Think about what is REALLY the best for the character - and if you still feel the way you do, I'm sure they'll fix it up. I just want you to think about the character himself - as opposed to solely your own feelings.
ReplyDeleteRehearsal was incredibly productive up until Scene 13 - it seems to be a stumbling block every run through. Xander and Dillon, I don't know what more you can say that I haven't said and Mr. D and Moore haven't addressed today, but if you have anything to motivate them and get that scene in order - DO IT! The show looks great, and that scene is hilarious. It just needs to be executed.
Commitment to character and diction are the biggest issues right now. I think the show's really coming along though.
I wish we could have gotten further through the run today, but I think we did good work and the time was productive (for those who's scenes we reached).
Charles, I didn't even know there was said picture, but I agree that it shouldn't be in the office, however if I don't see it I'm making it stay there. On the Tristan issue, I'm actually kind of surprised, because I haven't noticed him doing anything wrong...ever. I thought today's practice went really well. I really don't have to much to say, because Zander took the words out of my mouth. Just talking to Amber and DJ should be good enough to get composure of our scene.
ReplyDelete"Ladies, Ladies, this is good, let’s talk this out." That sums up tonight’s blog. Anger, frustration, joy, and confusion have all appeared and we can use the blog to resolve the issues. Scene 13 is a bump, but is fixed probably in the top three for best scene. We now know what issues to address concerning various scenes, etc.
ReplyDeleteLena: Sorry if it seemed like a direct attack on all, it was more a combination of venting steam and trying to explain my opinion of the character and his appearance.
James: Mr. Sail is a bit whimsical, but aside from the yellow tweed three piece, it is all rather subtle. He has diamonds on his cufflinks, a sword under his desk, a revolving bookcase. Upfront caring and kind, but on a more personal it is slightly more eccentric, but those upfront qualities never die. Also James, remember that writer of this part of this amazing play was a person named Charles Merrick, so I am more than just an actor (although way below a director).
Dillon: Tristan is a subtle annoying, which is less annoying, but more cunning. He is quite, but fiddles around with stuff. He plays with the pencil pot, I ask him not to kindly because we need to practice freezing and he will proceed to play with the pot more. Its not a major concern...yet, just make note when other scenes are going on. Oh and do the same for me too please because I fiddle as well.
I appreciate all your opinions greatly.
From Charles
Charles- i am sorry the picture offended you/ did not fit your view of mr. sail. this si some thing that Dillion as the director though has final say on. if it does not fit his vision then it will go.
ReplyDeletein my opinion i do not see it as that big a deal because a audience member will nto be focussing on the picture on the wall they will be focussing on the scene it self. god forbid if one or two audience members mange to figure out what it actually is then great for them they will get a chuckle. in the end its not that visible.
at the end of the day there are many small things in the set that are smilar to this.i just dont feel as though this one picture should be such a big deal. Sadat and Charles, it was not worth screaming at each other over it, its just a picture.
on a positive note, i loved sitting in on rehearsal its really helping me with my ideas for my LD, seeing the blocking for once is very useful and h hopefully will allow me to avoid many problems later.
i have some notes that a few of you know about but i will bring them up in class. please remind me of this if i seem pre occupied.
good day, and good night to all.
coudn't agree more with coleman's comment about the picture. Its only a picture, and there are plenty of other minor comedic things in the set. Just look at the bathroom stalls they say "coleman + sara forever", "sadat is a hottie", "pible + sadat."
ReplyDeleteanyway, sitting in on the rehearsals is something i haven't had the luxury to do with some of the past few plays. It is great because ideas are more prevalent, and minor adjustments are caught now rather than when we go to start dry tech.
I figured that since I missed a bunch of blog posts due to procrastinating, I'd procrastinate by going on here. I'm doing that right now for that English paper I wrote about last night...that was due today...Just getting used to the habit.
ReplyDeleteWe can talk about the picture in the office during class in a civilized manner.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Austin -- I haven't heard anything back on Thurs. except from Fulton.
Fight practice today!
Just for the record (I realize I hadn't commented on this) - I wasn't trying to put you down with the "actor" comment, Charles. I realize that's a sensitive issue, and I wasn't referring to your role with the play really. Rather, I was simply commenting that you are not Charles Merrick in your scene, rather, you are Mr. Sail, and that Mr. Sail's views might not be the same as your own.
ReplyDeleteIt wasn't meant to be a put-down at all.
