Getting them OFF BOOK

In my experience as a director, people have many different ways of learning lines. People learn lines the way they learn anything. Sometimes, they haven't thought about this fact so much. There are many learning styles some of them are:
Repetition, Writing, Listening, Moving.
If you have an actor that is stuck, ask them how they best remember things. Then, they can focus on either going through the lines repeatedly with you or others, writing out their cue lines and lines, recording their lines and playing them back, or actually acting out their scene repeatedly.
Telling them to get off-book is not good enough. You must help them get off-book.

  1. My Comment on the Reading:

In some respects I wished we read this book at the beginning because it brings out some points that may have helped us with script writing. Namely, I'm talking about speeches and monologues becaause most of ours just tell a story rather then present a solution as the actor is recounting it. I'm not saying it will ruin the play, but it may weaken them without us realizing it. Otherwise, based on the reading, we seem to fairly competent directors as I have witnessed some of the tips mentioned in the book used by directors. Keep up the good work.
